Psych out?
Before you arrive at a written test or oral board have your mind set in
place for game day and know that you are 90% more prepared than the
other candidates. Make sure to stay away from the other candidates.
Because they might say something that could psych you out and throw off
you game plan. How would you feel if you started talking with your
friends and they told you they had received their results letter from a
department and you hadn’t. Would that psych you out? Yea!!!!
One of our candidates was in the holding pen for his oral. Like many
people, he felt the pressure to start a conversation with the other
candidates. In the process, he found out the guy next to him was a
scientist. He said, wow, how can I complete with this guy. It psyched
him out and through off his game plan. He regrouped for his next test
and did better. The next test after that he nailed his badge. He never
saw the scientist again.
A candidate a the recent Stockton test moved 3 times before the written
test started because the other candidates where chattering about the
test, how many they were going to hire and how many other lists there
were on.
By the way, this Stockton candidate said that the Don McNea Fire School
information for this written test was dead on! You can find out more on
the Don McNea Fire School here: http://www.fireprep.com

2. Entry Level Skills Tip
===========================================
In Flight Training
While driving to dinner recently, my wife Harriet mentioned she found a
new way to use the high beams on her car. I was trying to follow the
instructions while driving along a 45 mph. The first thing that
happened when I pulled a lever was the windshield wipers came on.
Another try turned on the window washer.
Yesterday, it was pouring rain. I jumped from the passenger seat of
Harriet’s car to the trunk and pulled out this huge golf size (not I
don’t golf) umbrella. I got drenched standing there trying to open it.
You had to remove this tricky latch before it would open.
Like a student pilot, what was required on both these situations was
some pre-flight training (not in flight training) to know how to operate
the equipment before you take off. To learn the operations before they
were needed. It’s the same thing in taking oral boards. Too many
candidates aren’t ready before they show up and they attempt to wing it
with in flight training. They think about their answers in their heads,
write them down and think they’re going to come out of their mouth like
magic. Trust me it doesn’t. The brain and mouth do not operate that
way.
You don’t want to be caught flat-footed trying this stuff out for the
first time. Considering an average oral board is 20 minutes, how many
years of 20 minute oral boards are you willing to waste until you get
off the ground and soar towards a badge?
Case in point. An AMR medic told my son Rob that he just failed an
oral. Quick on his feet rob grabbed his video camera and said we’re
going to do a mock oral right here and now and find out why. When the
medic was asked the question “Tell us a little about yourself”, he said,
I like to race motorcycles and eat steak. It was down hill from there
with garbage answers. To the 4 onlookers there was no mystery why he
didn’t pass. This was not his first test. Testing for over 5 years
with mucho credentials and becoming a medic didn’t prepare him for the
oral board that is 100% of the score to get hired.
You need to prepare with pre-flight oral board training before you enter
the radar screen of the raters or you will crash and burn and get all
wet trying to open your umbrella. Our pre-flight training starts with
our entry-level program (gold package
http://www.eatstress.com/goldpackage.htm ), fill out the script,
practice it with the all-important tape recorder and come back for
private coaching. Those who follow this pre-flight training program are
the ones who are flying to new highs and gaining their badge (wings).
I talked to a new firefighter last night that gained his badge (wings)
using this program. He got his badge on his third test. He’s trying to
convince his buddies that it worked big time for him. They don’t
believe him and think they can wing it themselves. He said, hey you
spend 8-10 grand going to medic school and can’t step up and invest in
something that can help put you over the top. He’s jumping out of bed
every morning so excited and can’t believe it has really happened.
Here’s his testimony:
I just wanted to tell you I got the badge. What a life. I am living the
dream. I started testing in July of 2003 and was offered a firefighter
position on 12-26-2003. It is the best feeling in the world. I want to
really, really, really appreciate everything you have done for me. I
can't thank you and Rob enough. I know that with out both of your help I
would still be testing. This was only my third oral interview. Anyone
who really wants a job in the fire service should try your products. I
am living proof that it works. I will continue to use your program to
get better, because I am still going to test. I am having a ball. I
learn something new everyday. Thank you so much for always being there
answering all my questions and the many, many phone calls along the way.

Just Answer the Question.
Our constitution has a preamble. It sets the tone for the body of law
that follows, much like a prelude for a book helps set the scene for the
story that follows.
A lot of the people I work with in private coaching sessions either
knowing or unknowingly do the same thing. Don’t let yourself be one of
them.
When asked the question;” Why do you want to be a firefighter?” I’ve had
people talk for 30 seconds before they actually begin to answer the
question. I’ll hear “ I’m glad you asked me that”, or “ That’s a very
good question, and I’d love to tell you about my desire to be a
firefighter”. These people are taking time away from answering the
question, and risk losing the attention of the panel. Usually it’s not
just one question, they do it with every one of them. It’s as if they
are talking while they think of what they want to say. You never want
to
have your mouth in drive, while you brain is in neutral.
The best thing to do is just answer the question. It’s OK to pause a
moment if needed to gather your thoughts. If you need to you could
include part of the question in your answer. Like, “The reason I want
to be a firefighter is …”. But, nothing more, keep it simple.

4. Promotional Level Skills Tip
==========================================
Promotional Interviews:
Question: Do you have to go through all this preparation and
auditioning stuff if you're going to promotional interview, and you
already know the guys there?
The biggest mistake job interview candidates make in this situation is
when they know people on the panel; they don't think they don’t need to
do all the work. They figure everybody already knows about them, and
they don't have to say anything. Or, "It's on my resume, it's on my
application, and I don't have to say everything." Well, If it doesn't
come out of that slot between your nose and your chin (your mouth), you
don't get credit. You might as well have never have shown up. This is
how important it is to be auditioning for the part. You play your part
no matter who's sitting there.
I can't tell you how many times I've talked to guys from who have waited
for years trying for that golden opportunity to get promoted. Then they
blow it. Because they went in and saw Paul was on the board. He knows
Paul, they bowl together. Randy over there, why he's married to Randy's
cousin. My gosh, he knows everything about me. They come out, and
somebody else gets their badge! It’s devastating. They failed because
they didn't present the package. The other candidates did. It's show
time, ta dah! You have to bring out the top hat, the cane, step it out,
and give the board the complete show. It's you! It's the bright lights.
It's Broadway! You gotta make it happen. You gotta make the magic.
When I said this at a recent firefighters convention, Dan shared the
following:
in my department for the position of lieutenant. I knew all the people
on the board including a division chief. I was thinking, "Geez, I've
known these guys for 16 years. And, I don't have to say anything, they
know me." During my critique afterwards, the division chief said, "You
know, Dan, you've got so much going for you, but you didn't blow your
own horn. If you would have blown your own horn, you would have said all
the things that you got going for you, you'd have had it. Since you
didn't say a word, and I can't give you the badge." If you don't say it,
you don't get credit for it, period.

5. New Badges
==========================================
A busy month for new firefighters:
And no I didn’t encourage, pay, or know this testimony was coming in.
This happy new firefighter wrote this:
Captain Bob, I had a lot of odds against me because I am a type 1
Insulin dependent Diabetic.
I ordered your Gold Package a couple of months ago. Add me to your list
who succeeded as another successful candidate who got the badge. Over
600 candidates applied for a position of Firefighter in August of 2003.
I just got the phone call today Jan 8th 2004 that I am apart of the next
2004 Academy class. Out of the 600 candidates, the Fire Department
picked only 36 candidates to be apart of the Academy. The Gold Package
is such a powerful tool that words can't explain how powerful it can be!
I believe that this package was a powerful source in helping me
throughout all my interviews. For other candidates who think it is
impossible to beat out 600 or 2000 candidates, it is possible with the
GOLD PACKAGE. I had a lot of odds against me because I am a type 1
Insulin dependent Diabetic. But with the help of the Gold Package, and
how this powerful tool helped me with my interview techniques, I scored
very high in my interview scores to let me be apart of the 36 chosen
candidates. I have been trying for 4 years now and have tested at 9
different departments over the years. I ordered the GOLD PACKAGE and
after studying the techniques, the next department I tested at I got on!
My advise, don't wait any longer order this powerful tool to help you
get that badge! Thank you so much Captain! Dean
I got your Gold Package and listened to it several times. I then went
for a private coaching session with Captain Rob. He made me think
before I spoke and gave many useful insights. He helped me on the
dreaded question of why do you want to be a Firefighter. Well, it
worked. I have just been hired at a Fire and Rescue in South Carolina.
Thank you and Rob for all your help. Jerry
LISTEN to CaptBob--He knows what he is talking about---
Certs get you in the door-the oral skills get you the job--(this by the
way is true for any real job out there) Get his program---I know he is
laying back a little because he doesn't want to push it but I am sold on
his book.
I interviewed 2X with 2 different departments and the results were
astounding -Heck, in one oral, every single questions asked came out of
the book!
- 2 job offers in one week—
Dear Captain Bob - I was so very excited to meet you last week (while I
was in line for a Stockton fire dept application) and I wanted to send
you a quick little email to thank you for all of your helpful advice and
hints/tips/tricks to getting the job of my dreams!
Your DVD, workbook and CD (which I took with me everywhere and I
listened to it in my truck as often as possible!) about the Oral panel
interview was right on the money! And the report on the Psychological
exam gave me the valuable insight I needed to be more relaxed and at
ease with THAT whole process!
I have now been invited to participate in a Metro fire dept (just like
you said I would!!!) and will begin the academy sometime in mid-Feb.
(any tips on the academy?) I am so excited I can hardly stand it! Can
you believe I was up against 1,400 other applicants and got hired on
even though I'm only an EMT? (believe me I studied and prepped and
studied and trained and studied and practiced so I would be completely
prepared - my friends all thought I was nuts because I prepared so much,
but I think that is what it takes . . .and it worked!) Sherry
Here’s a double:
Dear Captain Bob-
My friend Mike and I would like to let you know how much we appreciate
the information your program provided us throughout our pursuit for a
badge. Both of us have been in the chase for one for over 3 years. Both
of us received the call of our dreams tonight! We were offered a job by
Salt Lake County Fire Department. The orientation is on the 20th and
recruit camp is scheduled to start on February 2nd. Thanks again for all
of the help your tapes and website provided us, both were a vital tool
in obtaining the job of our dreams! We'll keep you posted on our
progress!
Sincerely, Mike and Nick
