This month we are going to visit the psych because 40% of candidates
fail this portion of the testing.  But hold on.

After receiving e-mails like the following, it leads me to believe our
Psych Report is not just for the psych anymore.

Hey Capt. Bob, I got the Special Report in the mail today for how to how
to
pass my psych.  In the background investigation/interview I told the
investigator that I have smoke marijuana and the last time was about 1
1/2 years ago. He never asked how often I did it and I didn't offer the
information. Granted I have only smoked about 10 times in my life he
still never asked how often I did it. In your special report you said
don't open up a trail that can lead to your destruction. Did
I already do this in my background? Thanks for your help.

Captain Bob,
I recently completed a Pre background investigation packet with LA City
Fire which consisted of about 130 questions regarding ones background.
The same day I submitted my Personal History Questioner that was 37
pages long.  I recently ordered your Conquer the Psychological Interview
package. After reviewing your book, I get the feeling that I might have
already shot myself in the foot by disclosing a couple of things in my
pre-background packet.  I mentioned the experimenting with marijuana
about 6 times, I mentioned 1 physical fight I got in, and I mentioned a
Job a quit with out giving notice. How ever the company no longer
exists. What do you think my chances are of getting dropped at this
stage? Thank you in advance for your help!

Reply: The information in our Psych Report shows candidates how not to
establish trails where you don't have to and how to keep from stepping
on the land mines that could keep you from gaining your badge.  Don't
you think the above candidates wished they had that information before
their background started?  For more on the Psych Report visit

2.      Entry Level Skills Tip
===========================================

After his psych written, Tony received a call that his results were
inconclusive.  Since he lived in another state, they let him take home
the written to complete again.  He left a panicked message on my
answering machine.  Even though our Special Psych Report tells the
candidates to not try to figure out what the questions are geared to
finding out, Tony not only tried to do this on his first attempt, but
was sitting down with his wife no less (right, this will solve the
mystery) at midnight trying to figure out what they were looking for in
each and every question when I returned his call.  Folks this is mental
masturbation!

Stop the presses!  I told Tony to immediately stop this circus, go to
bed, regroup in the morning and retake the test alone not trying to
psych each question.  After much waiting after he sent it back, Tony got
the call he had his badge!  Whew!

A drum roll please:

Baaaaah daaaaaaaaah BUM! Cue the band!  Pomp and Circumstance!
Ooooooooooooboyoboyoboy!  Congratulations!  Tom

You have known him through his postings as firefighter Rob (f/frob).  As
of today, that changed.

You can't imagine the thrill when his mother Harriet (the bride of
almost 39 years) handed me the phone and said Captain Smith wants to
talk to you.  A proud son telling his dad he got the call he has been
promoted to Captain for Contra Costa County Fire. Proud?  Elated?
Emotional? Yep!  The Champaign corks are popping.  Badge ceremony to
follow.  I'm trying to fit into my old horse blanket uniform and
shinning up the boots, brass and badge.

It's kind of like being knighted.  We hereby bestow upon you the badge
of Captain . . .

Dan Poynter, a long time friend wrote:  Congratulations. Now you can
address each other the same way.

Reply:  Although he is a Robert Smith Jr., actually he goes by Rob Smith
AKA as firefighter Rob. Now it will be Captain Rob, son of Captain Bob.

If you want to send congrats to Captain Rob his e-mail address is
nrtc@sonic.net

This from Captain Rob:

Well, it's just starting to sink in. I'm a captain. Four the last four
and a half years I have been actively studying , testing ,worrying,
gossiping, hoping, and praying, and here it is. I've driven my family
crazy, studied while we were on at least 5 different vacations, and not
been there mentally when I was physically. I don't know what to do with
my self. My wife, Nancy, said I looked like I grew 5", but I told here
that was just the weight lifting off of my shoulders.

So, after someone gets promoted, they start to wonder, when will my
first fire come in. How long will they have that monkey on their back.
For me it was 2 hours 34 minute. We got a call for a structure fire,
geared up and responded. It was 103 degrees in the shade, as we turned
the corner, we saw smoke and flames through the roof of a 1.6 million
dollar mansion on the hill. Can you say pucker factor? It ended up going
to greater than two alarms. Boy was I tired, but as one guy put it, it
looked like I needed to walk around with a spray bottle to keep my gums
wet, because I couldn't stop smiling. I was the captain.

Captain ROB

That's my kid.  How proud can you be.

 4.     Promotional Level Skills Tip
==========================================

On some departments everyone takes the promotional test thinking, hey,
it's like winning the lottery.  Some don't even study.  Other
departments no one will sign up for the test unless they prepared
because they don't want to be embarrassed.  On one department 19
candidates signed up.  Only six showed up.  All six were promoted to
captain.  Some of the reasons given for not showing up were not
prepared, didn't want to give up their station bid, ride or sonority
pick for vacation in their current position.

On a recent large department where everyone thinks they can win the
lottery, many candidates failed the assessment center because they
weren't prepared for the non role-playing question:  You confirm your
firefighter is drinking on the job.  What are you going to do?  Too many
started a soap opera.  A couple of the wrong answers were I would have
him go home sick, I would have him arrange for a trade and would you
believe one said he would send the firefighter home in a cab?

These candidates did not take the position that the firefighters actions
caused them to follow the rules and regulations of the department
concerning drinking on the job.  It is not tolerated.  The big failure
here was they did not refer the firefighter to the Employee Assistance
Program (EPA).  One of the successful candidates said he would
immediately put the rig out of service and even produced an EPA pamphlet
from his jacket pocket to make the point.

 5.  New Badges
==========================================
Capt. Bob,

I can't begin to thank you enough for all of your products, phone calls,
and wisdom. This all started for me back in November 2002, which is a
just a short time ago considering most candidates can spend years trying
to get a firefighter job. I took the written test then for the Virginia
Beach FD. I am currently from NY. After receiving the letter to move on
in the process I immediately ordered your Entry Level Program and hit
the books.

Your emphasis on being prepared ahead of time has never been more true.
I found that after preparing for each step in the hiring process, I
could just feel the accomplishment walking out of that interview room.
The feeling that I had nailed it was so exciting. For those candidates
that think just because they are in the service as a volunteer or EMT,
gives them the knowledge and preparedness is just plain ignorant. I was
both a volunteer firefighter and EMT several years ago, and would not
have known the skills and nuggets needed to get that edge and advantage
through each step without your products, especially the CD/Video
information on the oral board.

Along with a private coaching session from your son Rob, and all the
information through your website and products, I am completely honored
to tell you that I will be starting the academy for the Virginia Beach
FD on august 1, 2003. I made it all the way through on the first try.

I have found that being prepared for each phase made the actual test
parts easy. The hardest part of this whole process was the waiting
process to find out if I was to move on! Over 700 people applied for
this position and only 27 were hired. I am one of them thanks to you and
Rob! This feeling of accomplishment feels like it will last a lifetime,
it's an amazing feeling. It doesn't matter where you are from, what part
of the country you're in, how old or tall, or fit you are, without these
tools you have provided I'd still be a phone man in NY. Now I'm achieved
my dream job and proud to say I'll be a firefighter in beautiful
Virginia Beach. Thank you.  Tim

Capt. Bob,
First let me start by thanking you for all your
invaluable information and guidance. I've been using
your information and services for about a year now and
at long last after seven years and about 54 FF tests I
have reached my goal. Today I just got my official job
offer. I also came out #1 for another So. Calif. Department.
I am very excited about having a job
much less 2.   Cyrus

Dear Capt. Bob,
I would like to use this opportunity to say thank you for the help I
received from you and your son Rob. I was hired in by a great department
about ten minutes outside of Sacramento, CA. The funny thing is as I am
getting to know my Company and others in my department and almost all of
them have used either your tapes or had one on one interviews with you.
It just goes to show that your program really works. I love my career
and thank you for giving me the opportunity to succeed and fulfill my
dream as a firefighter. Thanks, James

Demotion
Well, I've got some bad news. As of July 24,2003 I've gone from
lieutenant back to firefighter. The good news is that I'm now a career
FF'er with a city department. I got the call on Wed. to come in to talk
with the Chiefs. Ohh what a feeling!! I'm a FIREFIGHTER! I start Aug 4
and I can't wait. I like to give a little credit to Capt Bob even though
I didn't subscribe to some of his literature his post on firehouse
forums have been very helpful. To everyone aspiring to be a career
FF'er, don't give up, study and practice hard, and say a prayer every
night and soon you'll be sending a post like this too!

Good Luck! FF Steed LFD
P.S. Oh I still get to keep my LT. badge at my vollie Dept.

I just got back from our local farmers market. A guy walks up with a
Lynnwood Washington FD (he was here visiting relatives). He said,
"You're Captain Bob, right?" Yep. Turns out Scott was a fire explorer
with our department. He went to Washington state for his degree, met his
wife to be, got our program, tested and was hired by a department and
recently lateraled to Lynnwood. Here he is beaming with his chest all
puffed out and his wife by his side holding their young daughter. Does
it get any better? Made my day.
