http://www.eatstress.com/firezinearchive.htm 20 percent of the interview is to determine your skills. 80 percent of the interview is to determine your ability to fit into the organization. More than true. I talked to a rater who just sat on a panel the other day. He said if they didn't think the candidate would fit in with their department he would rate them with a score of 69. That would guarantee they wouldn't be considered. So how do you get through the maze? Here are two new firefighters that got their badges the first time out: Dear Capt Bob, I was referred to you by one of my friends approximately 4 months ago to help me with my oral boards. I recently took my first oral board for a department in Fresno County and got hired!!!!! There is absolutely no way I could have done this without your program. This is the department I was looking to get hired at. Thanks for all your help. John I just wanted to take a minute and thank you for the help. I just got the phone call yesterday from the City of Las Vegas Fire Dept. I start my dream job April 23. This was the first test that I had ever taken and wouldn't have made it had it not been for the private coaching that I had with you. I am only 23 years old and had no fire or ems experience to pad my resume with, but the tools that you gave me did the trick. For those that are a little skeptical of doing the coaching, I know that it made all the difference. The price to pay for the coaching was the best investment that I have ever made!!! Just do it! Thanks again Capt. Rob. You can now add me to your stats! Thank you, Sean I encourage you to look at the results other people just like you who have gotten their badges by using a formula like the above candidates. They simply got positive results by putting simple techniques into action. You can review what they had to say here: http://www.eatstress.com/testbest.htm
========================================== I have a question if they ask me to tell about myself. Should I bring up the topic of religion/Bible (as applying its principles has really improved my life)? Or is the Bible/religion a topic we should avoid? Another candidate wrote this for part of his answer “Tell us about yourself”:
On the spiritual level, I think
a lot of people ask the question, "What is the meaning of life". I know I must
have asked that question 1,000,000 times. I searched for the answer fruitlessly
for a long, long time. The answer was only revealed to me when I surrendered my
life to God. In my quest to understand god will, I came to understand that the
reason he put us here on this earth was to please him. The way that he asks we
please him is to love him and uphold his values. His values are unconditional
love and respect and patience towards others, to find peace in serving others. I
prayed for a way to strengthen my bond with others and become a valuable part of
others lives. I feel the way I can serve others is to become a dedicated
firefighter, a dedicated community servant...
========================================== http://www.eatstress.com/testdriveintro.htm Bottom line getting a badge is
all presentation skills! Lets talk for a moment about what our goal in an interview should be and what the board is looking for? Do we know what is on the rating sheet? …. Not on every test, but overall we have a pretty good idea what to expect. In each question the raters will have check off boxes they use to give you your score. In some, an area to give subjective points for if you gave them something in your response there was not a box for, or if they want to give you a little something extra for doing an exceptional job. So for the what have you done to prepare question, they would have a box for: EMT, f/f1, paramedic, A.A., B.A, volunteer work, etc, and then 1-3 points subjective. Your goal should be to attack these questions as if it is a military operation. Get in, get all the points you can and get out, with as few extra words as possible. As you can learn from our video, you could waste valuable time telling them of all the great people who taught your f/f 1class, all the experiences you learned, how you were part of a team, live burns, ladders, hose, feeling like you had seen your calling, and the board will just check off the box that says f/f1. If you told the same board I got my f/f1, they are still only going to check off the box that says f/f1. Raters already know what ff1 is. Don't waste time taking them on a journey of everything involved in getting it. Imagine that you were sitting on a hiring board, it is day 5 of 11, you have just had lunch and your feeling like a nap would be nice. Which of those responses would you like to hear? The long or short version? If there is a civilian on the board, the in service raters will translate for them later. Now, what are raters looking for, and who are they. Usually captains and chiefs will evaluate you. What do you think they are looking for in a candidate? I do not mean what would they tell a reporter or the personnel department, but what would they tell you if they went down at the corner pub with you and gave you their honest feelings? The chiefs are looking for someone that will never cause them a problem, you are going to be at work on time, not abuse your sick leave, no one is going to call and say they do not like working with you, you will not call and tell him you want a different station because your not getting enough sleep, you need him to think you will be a hire and forget employee. The captains are going to have to work with you, so they are more interested in who you are. What is the first thing that we do in the fire station, after we are done checking out the equipment and cleaning the station? We want to know whose cooking and what is it. We like our food three ways, on time, cheap, and lots of it. Make it hot. Make it a lot. The captain is also looking at attitude; is he going to have to ask you to clean the bathroom? He is also looking for someone who is going to be able to work a computer. Is there a computer in the fire station? Does he know how to us it. I work with captains that are afraid of their answering machines, let alone their computers. You just know their VCR is home flashing midnight. When answering questions it does not hurt to remember that you have your supervisor with you. If you get into trouble dealing with a citizen, police officer, or business owner, and you have done all you can, add that you will differ, ask for advice, or advise your captain. It is what we really do, and it lets the captains on the panel know you understand how important they are. It never hurts to stroke the board. Usually you are not evaluated by members of the department you are testing for. But if you are or if it is a chiefs, or follow up interview, the more you can make the department sound like the best thing in the world the better. We as firefighters place our professional ego with our dept. if you make it sound good it makes us feel good, especially if they are chiefs. Good luck, and keep practicing your script. Where ever you might be stuck in the hiring process from the written or video testing, physical agility CPAT, oral interview, psych interview, background, polygraph, or medical, you can find new powerful information on Captain Rob’s new web site here: www.myfireinterview.com CAPTAIN ROB (Thank you) Yes, a written test is necessary to set a standard for an evaluation for the position. But there is much more needed to make sure the candidate is qualified to lead, supervise and represent the agency to the citizens to protect life and property. Ask yourself would you buy a car with taking a test drive it? Of course not. Then, why would you promote an individual only on the basis of their written score? Wouldn’t you want to evaluate how qualified an individual is before you put them in charge of a company representing the department and being in charge of an emergency that is protecting your loved ones and the citizens? In our profession we never know what’s going to happen in the next moment. We could be part of someone’s worst day. Wouldn’t you want the most qualified candidate available so when the emergency takes place, the bells go off in the firehouse, the doors open and there is nothing they can throw at them they can’t handle? Do you hire new firefighters on the basis of their written score? No. You also have a physical agility, oral board, background, medical, psychological evaluation and maybe a polygraph. Having only a written score is like going back to the stone age. Departments over the last ten years have placed less importance on only the written test score and more on evaluations of qualifications through an assessment center. Most departments conduct a promotional assessment centers that can include, but not limited to, in-out-basket, preparing a presentation, Oral Board, confrontation and disciplinary resolution, Peer Counseling, and Tactical Fire Simulation. What could be a consideration for your agency is a three-part test: Written test 30% Oral Board 30% Tactical Fire Simulation 30% Seniority Credit 10% ??? This could be a minimum cost test gaining raters for other agencies. Your agency can send raters to these agencies when they test. Promotional Badges. Here’s two BC Brothers: Good morning, Captain Bob. You can add another badge to the list. I received a phone call on Friday advising that, as of Saturday morning, I was promoted to the rank of Battalion Chief! This morning, I am on my to my new assignment and expect to have the "official talk" with the Chief sometime today. To refresh your memory, I work in the Central Florida area for a 300+ member department. I spoke with you about 2 years ago about attending a promotional coaching session. Although, I had the option to complete it by phone, my wife and I decided that I would fly out to meet you. I had followed your web site/ career advise for years and this was an anticipated opportunity. Well, I tested well during that process but "died" first on the list this past year. Not being discouraged, and having all the right tools (Video, cassette tape, your DVD's, information, etc...), I tested again this past year. The test was similar with a grueling 180 question written test, in/out basket, practical scenario, oral board interview, and then the interview with the Chief. My brother, also a Lieutenant with us, and I decided to be study partners, although, I also offered to all the other candidates to join in. None of them accepted. My brother was amazed at the information that I had received from you through the web site and from my session. Many hours were spent preparing for each part of the promotional process. When the results came out in September, you probably figured right... I was number 1 with my brother at the number 2 spot!!!!!!!!!! ( You could probably count this as 2 badges? He also was promoted as Saturday) With my wife's support and you in my corner coaching, I have reached the next step in my quest to run my own department. I am not sure how to say thank you, but.................THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! I have and will continue to be an advocate of your services. Whenever, I have others approach me about advice with their promotional process, I tell them to forget all this "advice" they are receiving and go your web site and invest in their career. I better get going.............. Thank you! Todd Weidman, Battalion Chief

Bad enough to do what ever it takes. Signing up with you guys is definitely on the top ten things to do if you really want a job in the fire service. I actually feel kinda dumb not signing up sooner and getting coaching sooner. I could have saved myself some serious time, money and pain. Thanks again Capt. Rob. You can now add me to your stats! Thank you, Sean Capt. Bob, After taking over 20 tests during the past 9 years, I finally landed my dream job. I am writing to thank you and Capt. Rob for helping me. Your system is absolutely 100% effective. It is by far the best investment I have ever made. It gave me a huge advantage over the other candidates. When I walked out of my chief’s interview I was sure that I had nailed it. It was a feeling that I had never felt before. I thought to myself, “This isn’t even fair to the other candidates.” I am so thankful that I finally wised up after all these years and used your program. To anyone out there who is wondering if it works or if it’s worth it, I’m living proof that it is. If you want to be a firefighter, learn this method. You will succeed. Don’t learn the hard way like me by waiting so long to try it. Do it now. Please add me to your list of badges. Thank you. gaining a badge ========================================== ========================================== Difference between Women and Men 1. NAMES: If Laurie, Linda, Elizabeth and Barbara go out for lunch, they will call each other Laurie, Linda, Elizabeth and Barbara. If Mark, Chris, Eric and Tom go out, they will affectionately refer to each other as Fat Boy, Godzilla, Peanut-Head and Scrappy. 2. EATING OUT: When the bill arrives, Mark, Chris, Eric and Tom will each throw in a $20, even though it's only for $32.50. None of them will have anything smaller and none will actually admit they want change back. When the women get their bill, out come the pocket calculators. 3. MONEY: A man will pay $2 for a $1 item he needs. A woman will pay $1 for a $2 item that she doesn't need, but it's on sale. 4. BATHROOMS: A man has five items in his bathroom: a toothbrush, shaving cream, razor, a bar of soap, and a towel from the Marriott. The average number of items in the typical woman's bathroom is 337. A man would not be able to identify most of these items. 5. ARGUMENTS: A woman has the last word in any argument. Anything a man says after that is the beginning of a new argument. 6. CATS: Women love cats. Men say they love cats, but when women aren't looking, men kick cats. 7. FUTURE: A woman worries about the future until she gets a husband. A man never worries about the future until he gets a wife. 8. SUCCESS: A successful man is one who makes more money than his wife can spend. A successful woman is one who can find such a man. 9. MARRIAGE: A woman marries a man expecting he will change, but he doesn't. A man marries a woman expecting that she won't change and she does. 10. DRESSING UP: A woman will dress up to go shopping, water the plants, empty the garbage, answer the phone, read a book, and get the mail. A man will dress up for weddings and funerals. 11. NATURAL: Men wake up as good-looking as they went to bed. Women somehow deteriorate during the night. 12. OFFSPRING: Ah, children. A woman knows all about her children. She knows about dentist appointments and romances, best friends, favorite foods, secret fears and hopes and dreams. A man is vaguely aware of some short people living in the house. 13. THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Any married man should forget his mistakes. There's no use in two people remembering the same thing. AND FINALLY: A couple drove down a country road for several miles, not saying a word. An earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither of them wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of mules, jack asses, and pigs, the husband asked sarcastically, "Relatives of yours?" "Yep," the wife replied, "in-laws."
