International

Our program is international because of the internet. We often get e-mails like this one from England. I'm posting it to demonstrate the desire for a firefighter job is global. Though the terminology may be a little different, the goal for the badge is still the same.

My final oral interview takes place this Saturday for a firefighter post in the U.K. I came across your site while looking for tips on interviewing techniques and found it very helpful.

After exploring the info, I came to the conclusion that my rehearsed answers were those of a clone! Following your advice, I have been practicing my 'signature' story and would be grateful for your valued opinion on it:

(I am currently employed as a hospital engineer in the Estates department (info. on my application form). This is my 3rd time of applying to the Fire Service- but my first interview. It is with a brigade away from my area).

Question: why do you want to become a firefighter?

Answer: "I don't know whether you know where the Cheltenham Fire HQ is situated, but it is located on Keynsham Road which is the back entrance to the hospital and also where the Estates offices are located.

Consequently, from my office I am acutely aware of all calls made to the station and the sight of the appliances and crew is a constant source of inspiration.

When I see them, I say to myself 'I want to be part of that team going out to tackle a blaze, I want to be part of that team going out to rescue someone from am RTA, I want to be part of that team that pumps someone's flooded house out, I want to be part of that team that pulls a cow out of a river'. I also want to be part of that team that returns back to the station and clean down the appliances and equipment.

I also want to be part an organization that is respected by the community and not only reactive but pro active especially in the education and promotion of fire safety and prevention. I want a job that is fulfilling and will make me a complete person. Above all, I want to stand up straight and when asked what I do be proud to say I'm a firefighter."

This is the truth but when written down I'm wondering whether it sounds too much??

Many thanks for your advice

Mark

Have you heard this answer from a tape recorder?

A better answer would be what actually sparked your interest to become a firefighter. There has to be a time, situation or an emergency where you said that's it. Work on this.

Absolutely nothing counts 'til you have the badge. Nothing!
