Received an early announcement of a Christmas present:

I made it!!!!!! I received the FINAL phone call today around 2pm. I start the fire academy on Jan 2nd!!!! Sean

Then, I received a call from Denise, the lady in a candidate’s life Jeff wanting to give him a coaching session for Christmas. I talk to a lot of ladies in candidate’s lives. Many are looking for a ring and a date. They see it crystal clear what their guy needs to be doing to get in a better position to gain a badge. They’re usually right. Too many guys continue beat their heads against the wall trying to figure it out. Even after not getting a job after several attempts they have some how convinced themselves between the four inches between their ears that just around the corner at the next interview they will get the job.

Jeff is a perfect example of many candidates. He has some education, EMT, a volunteer, yada, yada, yada. I wish I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard this is all he wants to do. It’s his life’s dream.

He’s been testing for awhile and has overcome being able to pass the written but couldn’t get past the first oral board interview. You do know the oral board is 100% of your score to get hired, right? Everything else is usually pass/fail. One of his fellow volunteers let him borrow the CD’s from our program. This allowed him to see some of the critical major ingredients he was missing to get in a better position to gain a badge. One of the big clues was to go out and buy a hand held recorder to hear what the panel is going to hear. But it wasn’t until Denise took him down to the store did he get one. Come on folks???????

Jeff was just devastated by not being able to make it through the chiefs oral for a great department. Two of our candidates got job offers for this same department. The early Christmas present above is one of those who are headed for the academy. Jeff was competing against candidates who completed our entire program and left Jeff as the bridesmaid again.
