========================================== ========================================== How do you know? An oral board rater and friend John who just sat on a board said we had a lot of your candidates come through our panel. I asked him if they told them they were our candidates. No. Well, how do you know? Well, they all sounded alike. Those were not our candidates. They were probably candidates from college or academy programs. Then, John told me about this outstanding candidate Steve. I asked him if he thought this candidate had been prepared or coached. He couldn’t have because he was using his own stuff, experiences and stories. Uh, John, Steve is one of our candidates. No way. Yep, way. Steve had come to us after placing number 532 after his last oral. Like too many candidates Steve had great credentials but like a lot of other candidates was stuck in the process and didn’t know how to present the package. He came out number #1 on his very next oral that John sat on. The tip is if you prepare with your own personalized experience stories the panel has never heard, you will start leaping over your competition causing the panel to award you top scores; maybe #1 like Steve. I asked a candidate this week how he found us. He said a new firefighter for the department he was testing for told him that all but two recruits in his academy had used our program to get hired. How did all those candidates do that without sounding like one another? This just in: Capt. Bob, You can add one more badge to the count! I had my board interview on Sat. 1/28/06 @3pm and received THE CALL at 5:25pm that evening, I start in 2 weeks. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on the hiring process. I had worked for 15 years in the consulting engineering world up until Monday, so I was new to the fire service hiring process. Your program, website & newsletter help my application & interview skills immensely. I'm spreading the word to my classmates & friends looking to move. I will be keeping in touch when it becomes time to move up in the ranks. P. S. I forgot to mention that not only is this my first paying job in the Fire Service, but I am also 44 years old. Thanks again, Sincerely, Don Pysz More Oral Board tools here:
