Lose Ends??

Hi Capt Bob

I just received some devastating news I wanted to pass on to you and feel free to post this so others may learn from my errors.  I did private coaching last year with Rob prior to an oral in my "dream" department here in Connecticut.  I did great on the oral as a result and was ranked #4 on their list.  Since then it’s been a waiting game for openings, meanwhile the availability of other departments has been slim with little testing going on.

I contacted personnel prior to Christmas to check my status and they let me know that my name along with others was passed on to the Chief.  I was so excited.  Finally after not hearing anything for almost a month I contacted the Chief yesterday.  He regretted to inform me that he had to pass me over because my EMT cert had been listed expired on the National Registry website.

I had been signed up for a refresher class in the fall when my cert was up and the class was cancelled due to lack of enrollment.  The woman told me as long as I am not working in an EMT job right now I have a year to take my refresher.  I mistakenly took this as I was OK.  Given that and the fact that my marriage has been in the toilet, the holidays, blah blah blah I just assumed I would take my refresher after the new year.  Well that was by far one of the biggest misunderstandings of something I have ever had. It cost me a badge in my dream town.

As devastated as I am I have dragged myself up by my bootstraps to learn from this.  I am enrolled in a class in a couple of weeks and will not let this happen again as I am currently testing in a couple of other preferred towns.

I didn’t come this far to get that high on a list only to have it brushed under my nose and go right by.  Felt like someone slammed me in the gut with a sledge hammer.

As you always say do everything you need to do to get this badge, if certs are coming due get them done early, get it all done.

I'm trying to keep a smile and looking forward.  I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason.

Regards, Mark

Reply: Thank you for sharing your experience to help other’s keep from making the same mistakes.  You always want to have your ducks in a row so on game day you’re ready to move forward.

You were a viable candidate.  Check with HR to see if when you get your recertification they will let you back on the hiring list.
