I have a couple of oral questions for you. I have the gold package that I have been studying over and over, tape recorder, etc. One problem is that my voice keeps sounding monotone and I can't seem to shake that, except when I tell my "why do I want to be a firefighter story" then it sounds ok.

Reply: Continue to use the hand held recorder.  Apply that energy from that answer to your others.
 
My other question is this; I have an oral next week with a small dept. here. The odds are great, about 90 candidates for 18 positions. I want to stand out. I have met a captain with the dept. who has been helping me prepare.
 
My problem is that Capt. Bob always says that when a question is related to stealing, drugs, alcohol etc. there is a simple answer zero tolerance "take it to the captain" and don't make it a soap opera. But my new friend who is also on one of the oral boards says that he wants me to "think outside of the box" and say I would try to get him counseling for his problem.
 
This is his opinion but he is on the board, so I’m not sure how to answer. He said that everyone will give the same standard "drone answer" and he wants more.
 
Any suggestions?

Reply: Then you get to make a choice on what answer you want to use.  Everyone seems to become an expert once they get hired. He might want to hear that answer but will the other raters? For that type of scenario question you want to verify what you suspect, and if true take it to the captain.  It’s not your job to get him to counseling.  That indeed is creating a soap opera.

Why do you want to take it up to your officer?  For stealing or any of the other scenario ethical situations, are they tolerated, against the law, violation of department policy?  Yes.  Remember the oral board is Fantasyland.  You might do something different in real life but not here.  Just follow the yellow brick road and don’t look behind the current.

The biggest issue here is the violation of public trust.  Your officer will decide what action and direction to take.

Last year I interviewed for a badge. And unfortunately I was passed over. I purchased your material and religiously practiced and put my story together. I made friends with a tremendous amount of people on the department while going though the process. When it came time to interview again for the next academy everyone and their brother wanted to give me advice and set me up on mock interviews. I did too many interviews and took in too much information. I picked up some key things to focus on that were department specific and threw the rest of the stuff out! I used the right nuggets that I practiced for over a year and kept the "expert advice" as simply that.... advice.  Last week I got a call from the Chief and got the badge!
