Rev it Up!
As I walked down one of the outside isles of a car show this summer, I
heard what sounded like a healthy Ford Cobra revving up. As I
approached the VroomBox booth I found the sound coming from a mini-van.
A mini-van? The sound changed to a Hemi Barracuda. Then, a Camaro SS.
Mirrors lying underneath the van revealed a set of speakers. As the
mini-van motor was revved up, the VroomBox was converting and amplifying
the sound and RPM’s to the selected drivers desires, creating a lot of
smiles and laughter.
VroomBox utilizes a powerful microprocessor to digitally recreate the
sound of 15 different cars and fantasy vehicles. It even includes
special effects like screeching tires and turbo blow-off valves that
trigger automatically. Sounds and effects are controlled from a small
faceplate with a backlit display that fits neatly on or under the dash.
You can check Vroombox out here:

It made me think of a recent oral board raters comments on how too many
candidates aren’t aware that if they could only amp up their oral board
presentations they would capture the interest of the panel members and
get better scores. The problem is most candidates aren’t aware that
they sound monotone, with no inflection, ramble, use pause fillers and
have no idea what the panel members hear out of their mouths.
I often receive phone calls from candidates. In just a few moments I
can tell what kind of presentation they could make in their interviews.
When I say, “You need to hear yourself on a tape recorder”, they usually
respond with this is not how I sound in an interview. I reply with,
“Oh, I’ll bet big money you do!”
You can be the VroomBox too! You have the all-powerful microprocessor
already on board to digitally recreate the sound you need to rev it up
in your interviews. As one candidate said after he just got hired,
“Getting this job is a race where you don’t know where the finish line
is. You just keep running until they tell you to stop.”
How can you learn how to rev it up? Get married to a tape recorder and
practice, practice, practice until you hear the desired sound you want
the oral board panel to hear. Then you can burn out like a Camaro SS as
you come into your interviews to capture the panel member’s interest.
Switch gears to the sound of a Shelby Cobra to deliver your “Nugget”
answers to get top scores. Raise the hairs on the necks and arms of the
panel members like the Barracuda with your signature stories as you pull
away from the competition. Then, accelerate to high speed like a
Stingray to come in for the winning flag.
Then you could hear a different sound. The sound of a diesel firing up
followed by a siren and you can’t believe you are living the dream.
Riding big red. One of the last of America’s heroes.
Does it take a lot of horsepower? You decide:
Captain Bob,
Having no FF history and knowing only a few firefighters, your gold
package aided me in getting my badge. Out of over 600 applicants, I was
# 6 and the dept. was hiring 8. I start October 3rd. I'm proud to say
I'm officially a new member of a Fire Department, just north of
Indianapolis, IN, which is also located in the fastest growing county in
the state as well as the whole U.S. JIM
Capt. Coaching is just a tool, it was not meant to give the candidate
the correct answers on what to say, it was meant to be solid in
answering the questions and sound unique. I in fact met with Capt. Bob
and used his program, and after just 2 interviews I was in. I used his
approach with my answers. Good Luck... Bill
