Panel Members Make Up It doesn’t take long as a panel member to realize that most of the candidates coming through sound like everyone else. I could tell which college program, academy or coach a candidate came from during an oral board by the second question. What's sad is most of the candidates didn't know they sounded like everyone else. The oral board would roll their eyes, "Oh, boy, another 'Clone'". What we really want to hear after constantly getting an attack of the clones is a candidate who can deliver education, experience and life experiences to cause the oral board panel to say, “We have been waiting for this all week!” This happened at the end of Joe’s interview two weeks ago. The chief said, “ You have been the ONLY candidate who has convinced us that you genuinely have what it takes to be a member of our department. Joe was overwhelmed with emotion. Finally, after 7 years of testing he finally, as someone wrote here recently, cracked the code. You can read more on this here: http://www.firecareers.com/viewmessages.cfm?Forum=11&Topic=3257 Anyone who has gone through our program knows that the corner stone is to use your life experiences to personalize your presentation to be able, as CostalFF has written above, to speak from the heart. Some say, "Captain Bob" how can you help so many candidates without making them into clones?" Good question. Simple answer. The real reason is nobody else can tell your story! Nobody! When you start lacing your answers with your personalized experiences is where you start to shorten that gap between you and that infamous badge. One of our captains, Mike, was sitting on an oral board for our department. He came back telling us about this great candidate. He couldn’t say enough about him. I asked him if he remembered his name. How could he not have remembered, mike said. I asked him if he thought this guy might have been coached? He say nah. This guy had so much great experience and personal stories there was no way he had been coached. This guy came out number #1 on the list. Then I told mike this guy was one of our candidates. He said, no way! Yep, way. What was amazing was after three years of testing this guy placed 532 on his last test. This candidate leaned how to take his personalized life experiences and convert them into a killer presentation that moved him from 532 on a list to number #1. This posting is about a candidate who had been testing for a long time and became quick studies to turn it around and gain his badge: http://www.eatstress.com/treadwater.htm Half the candidates in a Colorado academy were our guys. You couldn’t tell one from the other because they were using their own stuff. I got a call from Jay, a captain from our department. He had sat on an oral board on a recent oral board. He said, we had a lot of your candidates come through. How did you know that? Did they tell you? Jay say no. Then, how did you know? Well, they all had that sameness about them; using the same answers. I convinced Jay those were not our candidates, but candidates who have been made into clones through college, academy, other firefighters, candidates and programs. He said, now that I think about it, they all sounded like my daughter who is a fire academy graduate. I asked Jay about the candidates who scored the highest and got the job. He told me about these three great candidates who just nailed it. Yep, you guessed it, they all went through our program.
