Quick Tip

Think First
Mark called asking how he was going to fill out a section of his
background packet asking the question, “Have you ever had a conflict
with a supervisor?”
CB: OK, have you?
MJ: Well, yea, I’ve had conflicts with 3 supervisors while working for
as a medic for an ambulance company the last 5 years.
CB: Did you complete medic school to become a firefighter?
MJ: It’s been my life’s dream.
CB: Then, what in the hell were you thinking? If you knew you wanted
to be a firefighter and getting into conflicts with your supervisor
could create problems getting hired, why did you do it?
MJ: Well, I thought I was right.
CB: Oh, so you thought you were right and got into a conflict with 3
different supervisors? Now you have to write out on your background
packet that you had a conflict with not just one, but 3 supervisors. If
you don’t put it down and they find out while checking with your
employer, you’re toast. You could be 100% right and never see a fire
badge.
This should be a big wake up call. The fire service is a semi military
organization. What this means is we are the military and you’re the
boot. Got it. If can’t keep your nose clean and attitude adjusted you
will pay the price in the hiring process. If you have already
demonstrated that you will be a problem child and mal content, why do we
want to even consider taking a chance on you?

Important Information You Need to Know!
Budgets have been tightened and there have been isolated situations
where there have been lay offs and station closings. But I believe the
economy has improved and cities are testing and, yes, hiring.
Yes, candidates are getting hired! Because the calls we’ve received from
candidates that got badges hasn’t slowed over the last year. In fact it
has increased in the last few months. From December 04, through
February 05, forty-nine (yep, 49) candidates notified us that they got
the call and received their badges (normally a slower time of year).
That’s an increase of over100% than the same time period last year. You
can check out their success stories here

As one candidate told me on the phone today, there are so many tests
right now he has to decide which ones to take.
Some Historical Perspective from son44:
In the late seventies (post prop 13) I was interviewing for Hayward
Fire. During my interview I opined about how unlikely it was that I
could be hired, due to the effects of Prop 13.
One of the raters pointed out to me that even with reductions there
would always be a need to hire because of natural attrition within the
department.
The unspoken message was that I could only control my side of the
equation and be as ready as possible when I got the call.
Hayward did not hire me. But this is my 25th year in the Fire Service in
my dream Department.
My message to candidates is prepare and persevere. You can do it. Don’t
quit trying and don’t get discouraged.
CB: I was back there in the 70’s when it happened. That’s as true now
as it was then.
The real secret in getting a badge is learning how to take oral board
interview. It’s usually 100% of the score to get hired. Without
learning how, no matter what you credentials you won’t place high enough
on the list to ever see that badge.
As one candidate just wrote:
Dear Captain Bob,
I took my first oral board and bombed it; I knew that I would need help
to get back in "testing shape". I ordered your program and the very
next test I took, killed it. My answers just rolled out of my mouth,
and the board just ate it up. I'm pleased to say that I got the job.
Thank you so much.

As this and the other 48 candidates above know, the proof is in the
badges!
