Quick Tip

 Game Day

I received two calls this week from candidates who have been testing for some time and the department they really want to work for just invited them to their orals.  One said, he got our program and a tape recorder but didn’t know where to start?  I asked him if he had listened to the CD’s, the DVD, read the book, completed your script and practiced his answers with a tape recorder?  Well, not yet.

The other candidate said he just got his letter and could he get in a coaching session this Wednesday before his oral on Thursday?  Please.

Basically these candidates and many like them for entry level or promotional testing do not have a plan for game day.  Both candidates acted like they had been caught flat-footed.  Like they sprung it on them.  Captain Rob www.myfireinterview.com says, “If you put in an application there’s an oral board in your future.  You just don’t know when.  If you understand that 100% of your score to be hired is in the oral board, why do you wait so long to get ready for game day?”

Quarterback Steve Grogan of the New England Patriots was the 190th player to be drafted in the sixth round.  They decided to take him over another player because he was taller.  Steve now has two super bowl rings.  He says he can directly connect his success to religiously watching game footage.  He orchestrates his playbook so when he shows up for a game day he knows what to expect and what he’s going to do.

You should be doing the same thing.  If you don’t have a script put together for your playbook you’re going to be at a tremendous disadvantage on game day going up against those who are ready.  Successful candidates tell us having the advantage of being video taped or audio recorded in a coaching session, that they can play back sections again and again to improve their presentation, was one of the key factors in their gaining their jewelry (badge).  More on coaching here: http://www.eatstress.com/private%20coaching.htm

One told me he didn’t realize how bad he was until he listened to the tape recording of his coaching session. He said, “Man I sounded retarded. I can’t believe how much stuff I left out. How many times I said “What Ever” and other stupid pause fillers I didn’t know I was using."

The mystery of why this super qualified candidate could not get hired was solved by listening to a tape of what the panel had been hearing for four years.

Here is a candidate who had his playbook ready on game day:

Capt. Bob, Thank you for putting your EXPERIENCE and KNOWLEDGE into a system I could gain from. I ordered your gold package about a month prior to my interview with a large department. In that time I was able to study and put your advice into use during my preparation and interview time. I believe that with your help I earned the job. I start the academy on November 14th, 2005.

Not only did your system help in getting me hired, but it also presented me with valuable information on being a successful firefighter.

 Thank You! Tom
