Master the First Impression

The following is from Work Your Network, by Joe “Mr. Network” Pelayo
http://www.josephmichaels.com/book/book.shtml  :
A UCLA study found that when 2 people meet
for the first time they make 20 distinctions about each other in the
first 20 seconds, then spend the next 20 minutes finding out whether or
not they were right! The same study found that a handshake is worth an
hour’s conversation between two people, because handshakes are thought
to be a judge of your character.

Ties that Bind

The strongest non-verbal statement you can make in the oral board is
what you wear http://www.eatstress.com/attire.htm  With that in mind
Follow the bouncing ball on these e-mails:

Talk about a small world:

Captain Bob, I recently purchased your package on how to get the badge
and it changed my entire outlook on my interview skills. I just took an
oral board with a very desirable department here in California. I was
able to really connect with the panel and even got them laughing and
joking with me. At the end of the interview I thanked them and was
going to leave before inserting my foot in my mouth when one of the
board members stopped me and said "Matt you did really good today in
this interview and you look great, but you really need to learn how to
tie a tie". After that being said the entire board including myself
started laughing. I've been doing it all wrong for my entire life and
just found out about it on my oral board. Personally I don't think the
tie looked that bad, but what do you do? I left the oral board feeling
confident for the first time even after that comment. Could this really
hurt my score? If your to busy to reply that's OK, I just wanted to say
thanks. Sincerely, Matt

Reply: Matt, You wrote: I left the oral board feeling confident for the first time even after that comment. Could this really hurt my score?

Probably not although everything is evaluated. It would be minimal if
anything. What California department?

Right after that I get this e-mail. Note the #2 tie issue:

Captain Bob, I thought of you yesterday as I sat on a FF oral board in a
neighboring community. I am sure that some of the candidates you have
coached came through. I know you shared these points with me when I was
trying to get hired, but they were glaring missed "Nuggets" by the
candidates.

1. Don't talk about trouble you are having with Mom and Dad at home.
Firefighters have enough problems with our own families and don't want
to hire a new problem. Do your best to remind the interviewers of who
they were when they got hired not our punk kid at home.
2. Learn to tie a tie.
3. Don't swear.
4. You can keep your canned answers in the pantry I want to hear
about your real life experience.
5. Make sure your wife or someone who knows how hard you have been
working for this position thinks you look presentable. I put on my
Class A to interview you. Please do not miss my point, it's not a
fashion show it is about respect to the potential position; dress your
part.

Captain Jarrett Anderson
Training Officer
City of Napa Fire Department

I sent Matt’s original e-mail to Captain Anderson asking if this could
have been his candidate.

Then I got this back from Captain Anderson.

Capt. Bob,

I knew that Matt had your training, he has a shinny badge with his name
on it some ware. I had a BC from a department belittle me in front of
the rest of the oral board about my spelling; it left me with a really
bad feeling to this day (14 years ago). I kept that incident in mind
when I brought up the tie. I’m sure you have already told Matt not to
worry about the tie affecting his score. Matt is a dialed candidate
that I would take on the engine any day. I would have shown him how to tie one on the spot if he would have asked. I had a Captain in Hayward (you) who noticed my potential, and gave me some really great “Nuggets”; I kept that in mind as well when I made the comment.
Two things for Matt:
If he wants to go from 90% to 100% he needs a personal coaching session.

If he needs help with a tie or anything else give him my number.

Talk to you soon, keep sending us great candidates!

Captain Jarrett Anderson
Training Officer
City of Napa Fire Department

BTW, Matt e-mailed me that he was going to the Chiefs interview!

So, how do you tie a tie? You can learn how here:
http://www.krawattenknoten.info/krawatten/Krawattenknoten/tieknot.html

The small tie knot works just fine.

Our newest badge:

I just had my first interview after I had prepared with your program and
guess what? I GOT THE JOB!!!!

Capt. Bob, I just wanted to say thanks for your help. I ordered your
gold package program http://www.eatstress.com/goldpackage.htm a couple
of months ago and it made a big difference in my interviewing
techniques. I have been testing for about 3 years and have been working
as a volunteer firefighter for about a year and a half. After I
listened to your program I realized all of the mistakes that I had been
making. Answers that I thought had been solid were really some of the
worst I could have been giving. I just had my first interview after I
had prepared with your program and guess what? I GOT THE JOB!!!! Placed
in the top 5 when they were hiring about 20. Needless to say I am very
excited and can't thank you enough for putting together this program.
It was well worth every penny to be living the dream!

Thanks again, Rob
