How many opportunities have you already wasted by not being really ready to take a promotional test?

Greetings Captain Bob!

It was my second crack at the Captains promotional and I didn't want to leave any rocks unturned. I called Captain Bob and got started by getting his  "Promotional Program".

Almost immediately I felt his enthusiasm and support, I felt my motivation increasing as we spoke on the phone. We got started by cleaning up my resume and making it more readable, what a difference when we were done! The oral board complimented me on submitting just a one page resume.

After receiving my package in the mail I got to work with my recorder. I especially liked the CD and would listen to it every time I drove in the car. I found that the CD information would put me in a frame of mind that would have "my nuggets" popping in to my head.

I couldn't believe how well my interview went, I was answering the questions and adding my own signature stories when appropriate. The interview panel was looking at me like I had invented electricity, I could tell that no one else had answered this way. I had the number one score in that portion of the exam.

After the final Chiefs interview was given the Chief called me and informed me that I had finished #1 and that he wanted me to be one of his new Captains, I couldn't believe my ears, I was going to be a Captain. What was most interesting was the number #2 candidate was the "Oral Board Guru" who teaches interview skills at the community college.

I love my new job. I have been placed in the training division and am planning an in-house academy in April. I am also on several committee's and task forces that meet on a regular basis. The thing I like the most is that now I am in a position to get things accomplished, no more complaining about the bosses now I am one.

Captain Bob was there for me from the beginning. I did the work and he gave me the support I needed. Thanks Captain Bob!!!!! Your friend, Chris

Resume Service

The Promotional Assessment Center Interview

You have fallen off the end of the earth for up to a year or more. You’ve been immersed in preparing for the written portion of a promotional test. You have gone through all the policy and procedure manuals in the job announcement, purchased books, IFSTA manuals, and anything remotely related to the test. Your family can’t remember who you are.

While taking the written test, you can’t believe your agency, or the testing firm they hired for big bucks, could know so little about the fire service and put together such an irrelevant test. The major areas that were listed as material to study on the announcement didn’t have one question on the test. Talk about a dog and pony show.

Several candidates, including you, protest test questions. One you protest, you already had right. Weeks pass. Even though the personnel department knows the test scores within days of test they finally release the results three weeks later. You’re not number one. But, you’re not at the bottom either. You’re in the upper end of the pack in the middle. You’re in the Olympic camp. All you have to do is make the cut.

After investing all this time and money for the written test that can be weighted as only forty percent of the total score, most candidates do little or nothing preparing for the remaining sixty percent in the interview process.

Many candidates think they have it figured out in their head and write it down that it’s going to come out of their mouth the same way. It doesn’t! They do mock orals with their buddies who either have never been on an oral board (everyone is an expert) or it has been so long, they are out of touch with the process. These buddies can’t bring themselves to tell you how bad you really are.

Over the last 35 years I have been helping promotional candidates most of which had great credentials. They had degrees, certificates, training, and experience. Yet, they couldn’t present the package. And, if you can present the package . . . you don’t get the badge. Period! These people are shocked that candidates will less credentials, seniority, the village idiot, or guys they refer to as the "Car Salesman" type get the badge that had their name on it.

Most Don't have the Necessary Presentation Interview Skills:

The Problem is Poor Oral Board Presentation Skills! Most candidates don’t do enough testing to get good at it. The problem is most of them don't know how poorly they are doing. I've seen it too often after being on over 175 oral boards. It's the most misunderstood and least prepared for portion of the testing. Have you been beat up enough in the past, are you tired of being the bride’s maid when lists expire, and identify with what you have read so far? If you don’t think so, you might be in denial. Denial is a river in Egypt. Let your wife or friends read this far let you know if you qualify.

If so, I want to share some of the "Nuggets" I’ve acquired from 30 years of fire service test experience that have helped shortened the learning curve to enhance and strengthen your position to get promoted. Are you ready to take the plunge? If so, here we go. Keep your hands and feet inside the ride at all times.

This is a great time for promotional opportunities. Up to forty percent of the positions in the fire service are promotable. It is the quickest way for you to improve the economic situation for you and your family for the rest of your career and far into the retirement years. We are at the natural 20 year cycle for retirement, the economy has improved and positions are being filled, and administrations are changing. And, you can never know what will take place in a promotional examination.

Candidates who don’t prepare, won’t show up at the written test to fail and be embarrassed. I know a test where 25 people signed up for a captain’s test. Only 9 showed up for the written. The 6 who made the list were promoted within a year. You never know.

The interview portion of the promotional is the most important. It can be as simple as an oral interview including a fire problem or a full-blown assessment center. The assessment center can be made up, but not limited to a combination of an in-and-out basket, fire problem, oral board, a presentation to a panel or group, peer counseling, conflict resolution, leaderless group discussion, or writing an essay.

Fantasyland:

The oral interview is like fantasy land. It is not like the real world. Your answers in the oral board might not be what you would do in real life. Don’t fall into the trap. The board understands the rules, you can’t fool them. If you try, the board will crank up the music and let you dance your fool head off. Don’t try to intellectualize and bring heavy logic to this process. If you do, someone, who understands the rules in fantasyland better will get the badge. So, please follow the yellow brick road rules in fantasyland and don’t look behind the curtain.

Here's what others are saying

Subject: Promotional Exam

Captain Bob, the journey is done, and with success. After all the protests have been review and six weeks have past, the test results are finally official. Of the 40 candidates that took the written portion of the test, only 20 proceeded to the assessment center. Of those only 14 passed the promotional process.

I am happy to say that my performance in the assessment center put me in the number 2 position in the overall ranking. I am currently filling a long term captains position.

Bob, the true formula to success of any promotional exam is time, dedication and tutoring. It takes dedication of your family, friends and company. You can't get through it without their help. And without seeking the proper tutoring "the cream will not rise to the top".

This is where I would like to thank you for your help. The "nuggets" you provided greatly assisted me with my success. Running with the pack is not good enough anymore. This reminds me of a saying I once heard, "Life is like a dog sled team, if your not the lead dog the view never changes."

The view is changing for me, during the life of this promotional list our department will open a new station, and with the retirements expected the captains promotions should exceed 8 positions.

Again, thank you, without your help the results would not have been quite the same. If I can be of any assistance to you or your students please do not hesitate to let me know.

Jeff Breasher, Engineer, (A/Capt. Sta. 39B) San Ramon Valley Fire District

You can talk all you want about what we do here, how you want it or think it should be, but the candidates you are reading about in our material are a lot like you. They simply got positive results by putting simple techniques into action.  The big difference is they figured out how to maximize the points in their assessment centers and oral boards, are puffing their chests out with a new badge and taking home that raise that will go way into retirement.

I'm already convinced I want the Promotional Program, take me to pricing and ordering information here

This just in:

I wanted to tell you that I attended a workshop last Tuesday put on by our Fire Chief's Assn. (They also do a majority of Promotional Testing assessment and interviews) They charge $85 each for an 8 hour class on a variety of topics--like assessment centers, in-basket, oral interviews. I found out about it after my coaching session on Monday so I figured it couldn't hurt. Everything you said was RIGHT ON THE MONEY!!! The afternoon session was a mock interview where actual Chiefs asked the questions. My first questions was "Why do you think you are a better candidate than the rest" It was SHOWTIME! Some guys that were watching actually clapped, and a LT sitting next to me said, "I'd promote you today!" The point is all of this stuff is starting to make a little bit of sense and I could not have done it without you--so, THANKS AGAIN! I also told everyone in the class about your website.

So, Thanks again--and if you have any advice about the closing statement or advice about my weakness answer--I'd really appreciate it!

Thanks again!--Jeff J

Well, Low and behold this follow up just arrived from Jeff after his first promotional up against 19 other candidates:

So, it went something like this....

Monday was the Oral Exam--the part I was dreading. It was 5 questions in a group interview format and I thought I did pretty well. The results were posted on Tuesday and I scored a 12.76 out of 15--not bad considering the top score was 13.20. I remained at the top of the list from the previously scored professional achievement points, seniority, and department evaluations. I felt confident that I had done the best I could have in the interview. I was A LOT more prepared than I would have been had I not used your program.

Now, I'm not from some big city department--my town has 40 full time firefighters. And, $$$$ bucks is some big money--but, it was worth every penny! It gave me the confidence and encouragement to do the best job I could! THANK YOU!

Today was the written exam--worth 40%. I scored in the top 3 and remained at the top of the list. I should get my (LT) badge in January.

I read all of the other candidates emails on your site and I thought that maybe your program works for them---on BIG departments---but it might not work for me. I could not have been more wrong! Your entire program from the video to the tape to the handouts worked like a charm. And the private coaching was awesome. I'll tell you what really sold me---when took the time to call me on the phone and answered every one of my questions. That really meant a lot!

So, if you have anyone that is skeptical, send 'em my way. If you're ever in Chicago, let me know, I'll buy you dinner. AND THANKS A MILLION!

And you were right---THERE'S NO BETTER FEELING IN THE WORLD!

Be safe!--Firefighter Jeff Janus

Captain Bob,

I had to write to thank you for making your program available. Over a year ago I ordered your promotion program to see if it could help me fine tune my assessment skills. The department that I work at was months away from having one of three Battalion Chiefs retire. At the time I had been in the fire service 14 years and had successfully passed the assessments for promotions to my then current level of Captain. I had been working to graduate from college with a fire science degree in order to meet the education qualifications for the position. I already meet the requirements of time in grade as a Captain. The other candidates that I would have to go against for the position had 19, 25, and 27 years on the job and had extensive experience as acting Battalion Chiefs.

I followed what you said by buying a tape recorder and practicing my part. I knew that I had to set the mark after drawing numbers and being selected to go first in front of the interviewing panel. I walked in totally prepared for anything that I could imagine that could come up. I even had a bucket full of "nuggets". I handed out notebooks to each panel member that I had prepared in order to show them the different things that I had done as a supervisor that made me ready to take on the roll of Battalion Chief. I walked in with facts and figures ("nuggets") not dreams and ideas. You were right, they all stopped and watched as I performed. It was hard to keep from cracking up. I left knowing that those that followed me were in trouble.

To make this story short, I came in NUMBER ONE. Your program gave me the edge that I needed. THANKS and keep up the excellent work.

Battalion Chief David Eddins
Albany Fire Department
Albany, Georgia

PS: If anybody passes up on buying your program they are CRAZY!!!

Still More:

Captain Bob.

Just wanted to tell you another success story. I've been on three BC lists in San Jose. I got your video and audio tape after seeing you at the San Jose Training Officers meeting. I used your stuff. I killed them. A rater on the board said that they were so impressed with me they were unsure why I wanted to work in their town....

Your stuff works. I will recommend you to everyone I meet. Now that I'm a BC. I'll have a lot of time to help others. Thank s for the help and thanks for the instructions.

Charles J. Gluck , newest BC for Watsonville FD

I don’t blame you for being skeptical. There is so much junk on the Internet that it’s hard to decide what is real and what isn’t.

I encourage you to look at the results other people just like you have gotten by using our formula. They simply got positive results by putting simple techniques into action.  Look at the emails they sent and review what they had to say:  More badges and success stories click here

You may already be doing OK on your oral boards. Do you know the advanced strategies to make it over the top to gain that badge?  How much time and great opportunities have you wasted so far?

Many believe it takes quite a while to get firmly entrenched in the promotional testing process and get a solid presentation going. That’s only if you don’t have the skills to know what you’re doing. The longer you wait, the further behind you’ll be and you may never catch your competition. The time to start learning is now. Each day you delay is costing you valuable time and money.  Pretty soon you could lose interest, be considered a part time hobbyist and NOT a serious candidate.

Do you realize that it would take you at least two years of full time work to figure out what is in our Promotional Program? Do you realize that you would have to buy all the Internet junk out there to figure out what is real and what is garbage? I doubt if you want to invest the time and money to make the mistakes of others.

That’s the reason for this program and that’s the reason people who have used it to convince those making the decisions they are the candidates they have been looking for their promotions . . . while too many others continue to make the mistakes that will keep them badge less.  Can you afford to make major blunders in your efforts to gain a badge when they could be avoided with a low $75.00 investment in this one-of-a-kind time tested reference tool? Especially when it comes with a no questions asked full refund it your not satisfied?

Ask yourself this question: If you could gain just one "Nugget" idea that can make a difference between where you're at now and a real shot at a badge, would you get it?

The candidates who do get our program could end up with your badge.
